FAVORABLE SENTENCING OUTCOME
Jerry Capeci, the nation’s foremost expert on the American mafia, reported on Mr. Caliendo’s representation of a so-called mobster in an Aug. 17, 2023 article. He described how “prosecutors” were “playing hardball” in asking for “42 months behind bars” for a client convicted of a union shakedown plus a separate fraud. They said he “collected many payoffs from a union official and had threatened the official both in person and in telephone calls.” But “[t]he feds lost that round when [his] attorney, Robert Caliendo, made a compelling plea for leniency, [using even] the feds’ own evidence” against them. A few months later the government went after the client again, seeking a ruling that he owed “$624,00 in restitution.” But Mr. Caliendo filed a motion opposing that figure and the judge agreed again, deciding that less than half that amount was owed.
